HPMA or Something Else? Five Questions Water Treatment Engineers Should Ask

The selection of water treatment chemicals often falls into one trap: comparing price. But what truly determines operating cost is never the chemical cost per ton of water—it is how long the system can run stably, how long the cleaning cycle can be extended, and how much blowdown can be reduced. When selecting HPMA, several questions are worth considering before purchase.

First, how high is your system temperature? HPMA’s advantage range is below 300°C, with a decomposition temperature above 330°C. If you are treating low-pressure boilers or flash seawater desalination units, HPMA’s temperature resistance can be a significant advantage. However, if the system temperature exceeds its applicable limit, a compounded solution should be evaluated.

Second, what are the water hardness and pH? HPMA performs excellently in the pH 6–9 range, with a scale inhibition rate above 90%. At pH 8.3, it still has a clear threshold effect. But if your water pH remains above 9 for long periods, or calcium hardness is extremely high, HPMA alone may not be enough. Compounding with PBTCA or ATMP should be considered.

Third, are there phosphorus discharge limits? If your industry faces phosphorus discharge regulatory pressure, HPMA as a phosphorus-free solution is a natural alternative. However, if there are no local phosphorus limits and the budget is sensitive, phosphorus-containing solutions may still have a cost advantage.

Fourth, will it be used alone or in a compound? HPMA alone is used at 1–15 mg/L. When compounded with zinc salts, it can enhance carbon steel corrosion inhibition. Kairui Chemical can provide technical support for compounding HPMA with EDTMPS, PBTCA, zinc salts, and more.

Fifth, can the supplier provide batch inspection reports? The bromine number, solid content, and molecular weight distribution of HPMA directly affect scale inhibition performance. Kairui Chemical promises to provide a quality inspection certificate with each shipment. If customer testing does not meet specifications, the product can be returned or exchanged unconditionally.

Kairui Chemical’s technical team can help clarify these five questions one by one. Provide your water quality report and operating parameters to receive targeted HPMA recommendations: 0632-5228899 / sdouya@gmail.com.
